Let's face it: We're all busy. And finding the time to eat right and exercise can seem almost impossible at times. I have 4 young children, and I work very hard, and I can honestly say that busyness is my biggest struggle in maintaining a healthy weight.
So here are some tricks I use to stay trim, healthy and sane.
My main tool for fighting busyness is preparing my meals ahead of time. I like to make big batches of super nutritious vegetable and bean soups. This supplies me with the protein and nutrients I need, and is low in calories.
I take 2 nights a week and make 3 batches of different kinds of soups, so we don't get bored. Each round of soups lasts our family 3 or 4 days. When I'm hungry, I just go to the fridge, heat it up and eat!
You can also cut up raw vegetables to have around for a quick snack. The trick is to find healthy foods that you like and to have them ready to eat at a moment’s notice.
And try to keep all the tempting processed foods OUT of your house! Temptation that's inconvenient is much more likely to be temptation that isn't acted on.

Finding time to exercise is hard, especially if you're addicted to hourlong workouts. Or if you think that's what's required to lose weight.
Fortunately, current research shows you can lose MORE weight by exercising less. But you need to make sure it’s the right kind of exercise.
I know this from personal experience too. Until a few years ago, I was addicted to long cardio exercise. I liked to go for hourlong swims, or when I was "in a hurry," I'd spend 45 minutes on the treadmill.
And while it might be better than never moving your body, what I didn't realize at the time was that I could lose more fat by exercising for just 20 minutes - using this method...
It's called high-intensity interval training (HIIT). And study after study has confirmed that people who do just 20 minutes of HIIT lose far more fat than those who do long cardio.
High-intensity training comes in various forms. The basic idea is that you perform an exercise (i.e., sprinting, elliptical, etc.) at maximum intensity for 40 to 60 seconds ... then rest for twice that amount of time. Repeat for up to 18 minutes, then do a gentle cool-down.
Any exercise that gets you breathing heavily works - biking, sprinting, jumping rope, swimming, resistance training... as long as it gets your heart rate up and you can do it at maximum effort.
And the great side benefit is that it takes a LOT less time than an hour(s)-long cardio workout. The results will amaze you.
In a recent study published in the International Journal of Obesity, women who performed 20 minutes of HIIT 3 times a week lost 11% of their body fat mass over 15 weeks ... while women who did 40 minutes of cardio per day didn’t lose any body fat.
Intense activity starts a process called excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). After you stop exercising, your body’s metabolism remains revved up for up to a few days.
This is not true of regular cardio, where you only burn calories while you’re exercising.
Plus, intense exercise actually builds lean, sexy muscles — while long-form cardio reduces muscle mass.
But it gets even worse! Long cardio can also cause cellular damage and wreak havoc on your joints. The exception to this is long walks, which can be very restorative and therapeutic.
For the sake of your time and your body, consider making the switch to HIIT. Limit yourself to 3 times a week ... start at your current level, gradually working your way up to higher intensity ... and check with your doctor first to be sure you’re able to handle this type of training.
